Veterans in Residential and Commercial Resurfacing

Justin Eversman

CEO and Founder
I started in the cabinet industry at a small, custom residential cabinet shop out of Boulder, CO in 1996. From there I learned the trade from many different aspects but was always drawn to the finish stages. I enjoyed creating custom-colored, multistage finishes that took an already great product to an even higher level.

After a couple of years there, I was asked to lead a very unique project in a full restoration of an antique luxury train line out of Denver’s historic Union Station. When that project was complete, I was hired at one of the nation’s leading furniture stores to bring their in-house finish program back from the brink of destruction. There, along with teaching the employees how to do large-scale finishing, I enrolled in their touch-up and repair classes. During that time, I also took two separate manufacturer’s training classes to perfect my skills.

In 1999, I was contacted by Colorado’s leading architectural millwork company to head their finish program as the department lead. After spending a few years working there, I realized that the work I enjoyed the most was going out in the field to do touch-ups and on-site refinishing.

Working out in the field opened my eyes to the fact that there was a real demand for high-end touch-up and refinishing done well, on time, and affordably. In 2001, the opportunity to create Surface Magic presented itself. Now I, along with my colleagues, have elevated Surface Magic to be Colorado’s premier touch-up company working on Colorado’s finest government buildings, office buildings, hotels, and resorts. We have tackled some of the largest commercial projects and all the way down to the smallest residential repairs. We have worked with international general contractors, five-star hotel chains, and big box stores, as well as the guy next door. In the future, we look forward to working with you to help make your problems disappear!

Steve Schmidt

Project Manager

As the project manager, I am usually your first contact with Surface Magic. In 1994, I started working in the touch-up trade, a field that has allowed me to help with some wide-ranging, amazing projects.

While most of my career has been helping commercial builders during the last stages of new construction, I have worked on more than a few sites on the national historic registry. Along the way, I have repaired and touched up the most modern, high-end finishes available, to rare antiques, the oldest of which being an Italian cabinet from the 1790s.

Unfortunately, a decade of hand sanding delicate repairs took its toll on my body, ending the time that I spent doing repairs, some portions of which I still miss. At about the same time [2001], Justin and I started working together under my trade name. After realizing that my talents would be much more utilized on the administrative side, I joined forces with Surface Magic to become one of the most highly respected touch-up companies in the regional area.

I share Justin's optimism in the recuperative abilities of the front ranges construction community and believe the worst of the building downturn is behind us!

So, with nearly 30 years of hindsight, what in my career am I most proud of? That's easy: creating jobs, finding work for others. In my opinion, nothing else is as helpful to both the community at large and to the individuals that I have worked with.
